Child Care Facilities Serving Only School-Age Children Training Requirements
Child Care Standards
65C-22.008(4) Florida Administrative Code
All child care personnel are required to complete 40 hours of mandated training.
Important Timeframes
Within First 90 Days of Employment
Introductory Training
Child care personnel must begin training within the first 90 days of employment in the child care industry by:
- starting a training course,
- taking a child care competency exam, learning an educational exemption.
One (1) Year from Date Training Began
All of the 40-hour required training must be completed one (1) year from the date the training began. Child care personnel must pass competency exams for the 40 hours of training to demonstrate their competency or receive an educational exemption.
Training
The 40-hour training for child care personnel working in facilities serving only school-age children can meet by completing:
- Child Care Facility Rules and Regulations (RNRF – 6 hours)
- Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (CAAN – 4 hours)
- Health Safety and Nutrition (HSAN – 8 hours)
- Understanding Developmentally Appropriate Practice (UDAP – 5 hours)
- School Age-Appropriate Practices (SAPR – 5 hours)
Total: 28 hours
See below for options for the remaining 12 hours
The remaining 12 hours must be met by one of the following options:
Option 1
Completion of the following online course and successfully pass the competency exam:
- Achieving and Maintaining Quality in Afterschool Programs for Child Care Professionals (AMAP – 12 hours)
Option 2
Completion of specialized school-age training, provided by a national organization or affiliates of a national organization with a demonstration of competency through passage of examination(s) or completion and assessment of a Professional Resource File (portfolio of materials that demonstrate competency). Note: This option does not require passage of a DCF Office of Child Care Regulation Competency Exam because the competency demonstration is part of the training program. This option will be verified during a licensing inspection.
Option 3
Completion of the following Department online courses:
- Child Growth and Development (CGDR – 6 hours)
- Behavioral Observation and Screening (BOSR – 6 hours)
Additional Required Training Timeframes
Prior to Caring for Children
Universal Precautions/Exposure Plan
Child Care facilities shall develop a written exposure plan regarding universal safety precautions. All child care personnel are required to be Prior to caring educated on the facility’s exposure plan regarding standard precautions for children before beginning to work and annually thereafter. The DCF Child Care Personnel Orientation Course (5 hours) provides general information on this topic that may be used to supplement a facility specific training offered by the child care provider.
Note: By June 12, 2021, at all times in each classroom/room/designated space, or outdoor area occupied by children, at least one of the child care personnel assigned to provide direct supervision must have current CPR certification as outlined in the School-Age Child Care Facility Handbook).
Within First 30 Days of Employment
Fire Extinguisher Training
All child-care personnel must complete training in the use and operation of a fire extinguisher. The DCF Child Care Personnel Orientation Course (5 hours) provides general information on this topic that may be used to supplement a facility specific training offered by the child- care provider.
Prior to Commencement
Medication Administration
Prior to administering medication to children, child-care personnel responsible for administering medication must complete training on proper medication administration procedures. The DCF Child Care Personnel Orientation Course (5 hours) provides general medication administration information; however, specific medical conditions would require more individualized training regarding administering medication for that condition.
Transportation
Prior to transportation of children, child care personnel participating in the transportation of children must complete one of the following courses.
- DCF Transportation Safety course (2 hours)
- Early Learning Florida’s Precautions in Transporting Children
Annual In-service Training
July 1 – June 30
Upon completion of introductory training requirements, child-care personnel must complete a minimum of 10 hours or 1.0 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) of in-service training during the state’s fiscal year beginning July 1 and ending June 30. Note: College courses concentrating on children ages birth through twelve will be accepted. Documentation of the in-service training must be recorded on the CF-FSP Form 5268 and included in the child-care facilities’ personnel records.
