This presentation provides an overview of community services in the state of Florida to be used as alternatives to State Mental Health Treatment Facilities for our forensic patients. It discusses the services the Department offers and is responsible for, as well as Department goals. This presentation reviews why diversion is a necessary and appropriate option for many individuals and how mental health treatment in the community can help individuals learn daily living and coping skills while remaining close to home and continuing with their everyday responsibilities. We discuss in detail the different placement options, typical referral processes, and typical eligibility criteria. Finally, we look at what’s to come and discuss the recent statutory changes. This presentation also serves as annual training for court-appointed evaluators conducting adult forensic evaluations pursuant to Ch. 916.
