~ Home for the Holidays Statement ~

"The holidays are a time to be together with family and loved ones and that is no different for Florida’s foster children. Over the past few weeks, I asked judges, attorneys and local community based care agencies to help the Department send foster children home for the holidays.

Many of our foster children are waiting permanent placement with parents or relatives outside the state of Florida. This process has historically been a lengthy one, but I can assure you, we are giving top priority to reducing the amount of time it takes to finalize permanent placements outside Florida.

I requested that you do everything in your power to expedite this process so that as many children as possible could be home for the holidays. On Thursday, December 20th we had 194 children set up to visit relatives out of state. By the next day, 236 children were able to spend time with family this holiday season. In addition, your efforts also allowed nearly 500 foster children to visit family within Florida. Up until the last moments possible, you were working diligently to make sure these children were with family and were able to have a loving holiday.

Your hard work and dedication permitted hundreds of vulnerable children to be with loved ones. These children you’ve committed to serve appreciate what you have done to make this holiday season a memorable one. May you also enjoy the holidays with your family."
