If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, please call 800-273-8255 right away. More crisis support information is also available.
To lower the suicide ideation, attempts, and deaths in Florida, communities, families and individuals can view suicide as a public health approach. The idea is to lower the characteristics associated with suicide also known as the risks and increase the coping mechanisms for individuals.
Currently, the Statewide Office for Suicide Prevention and the Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council focus on suicide prevention initiatives such as creating and implementing the Statewide Plan for Suicide Prevention in Florida as well as increasing public awareness. The Office and the Council were stablished in 2007 under the leadership of Governor Crist. The office was moved to the Florida Department of Children and Families in 2011 and it remains there under the Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH).
