Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week 2012

National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week is a national endeavor to promote education, action, and awareness about hunger and homelessness. Many homeless service providers around the country will be sponsoring events in local communities. Please attend events in your community in order to bring awareness to these important issues.

Florida Keys Outreach Coalition for the Homeless Inc.
Event: Hidden in Plain View: Faces and Stories of Homelessness Exhibit
Faces and Stories of Homelessness gives a human face to what is typically unseen and often ignored. The main component of the exhibition is a series of two dozen compelling black and white portraits of homeless people, each a commanding 24” x 30” in size, taken by photographer Sheelman.
The show also includes a variety of multimedia images, films, poetry, and quilts

Event: 2012 Homeless Challenge
Many Lee County churches, schools, book clubs, county offices, and restaurants are taking part in the Challenge by collecting and distributing clothing, blankets, food, etc. to homeless people between November 9th and 22nd.

Citrus, Hernando and Lake counties have issued proclamations designating Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week in those counties.
Event: Donations of food with pop-top lids, gift cards, shoes, socks, combs, blankets, backpacks, toothbrushes and toothpaste, feminine hygiene items, sunscreen, bug repellant, Band-Aids, hand sanitizer and wipes, disposable razors, soap, towels, blankets, bottled water, and batteries can be dropped off at 8 locations in mid-Florida. In Brooksville at Children’s Home Society; Dept. of Juvenile Justice; Jericho Road Ministries; New Beginnings Youth Shelter; Rising Sun Café; and Mid-Florida Community Services. In Spring Hill at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, and at all Jericho Road Thrift Store locations.
