Local Conference Aims to Create Better Foster Parents
~ Centennial Bank to be recognized as ‘Partner for Promise’ for contribution to support foster families and children ~

TALLAHASSEE – The local Quality Parenting Initiative collective is hosting the first large-scale training and professional development opportunity for current and prospective foster parents and adoptive families this Saturday, August 25. More than 50 foster and adoptive parents from the Big Bend area will gather to network and receive specialized training on issues common to foster care and adoption during various conference workshops.

Saturday’s conference is just one of a wide array of efforts under the new statewide foster care initiative, “Fostering Florida’s Future,” to recruit and support foster parents and help ensure the success of children in foster care. For more information, please visit www.fosteringflorida.com.

During the morning Welcome Session, DCF Northwest Regional Director Vicki Abrams will encourage local foster and adoptive parents and recognize Centennial Bank for a significant contribution to support foster families and children in our area. Centennial Bank donated more than 35 to computers to help foster children as they go back to school. This generous donation will improve access to training and enhance communication for foster parents.

Tanya Wilkins, Advocate for Foster Care and Adoption in the Governor’s Office of Adoption and Child Protection, will discuss the goals of the “Fostering Florida’s Future” initiative. Participants will also learn about local efforts to recruit and support foster families from Big Bend Community Based Care CEO Mike Watkins. A former foster youth will share how her foster parents made a difference in her life.
