DCF Southern Region partners with state Rep. Bryan Avila for water safety campaign
Rep. Avila will read swim safety book to 60 school children in Hialeah

HIALEAH, Fla. – The Florida Department of Children and Families’ Southern Region and the Office of state Rep. Bryan Avila are partnering to promote water safety this summer.

Rep. Avila will be reading a book about water safety to approximately 60 students from 12:45-1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26th at North Hialeah Elementary School.

“We are very pleased that Rep. Avila has joined our efforts to promote swimming classes for our children and safety around our pools and beaches,” said Bronwyn Stanford, Regional Managing Director for DCF’s Southern Region. “The more families we reach with this message, the safer our community will be this summer.”

“With over 1,000 miles of coastline, Florida’s beaches are a great escape for families. It is important to educate and inform our youngest and most vulnerable swimmers out there on how serious and dangerous it can be to be careless around outside water activities,” Rep. Avila said. “I’m excited to be partnering with the Department of Children and Families on their Water Safety Campaign to ensure that Floridians are being safe while enjoying our beautiful beaches and pools.”

DCF has launched a Water Safety Campaign to reduce child drownings. Since 2009, 490 Florida child drownings have been reported to the Florida Abuse Hotline.

The campaign promotes four rules for children to follow around water:

  • Never go near water without an adult.
  • Wear a lifejacket.
  • Learn how to swim.
  • If there is an emergency, call 9-1-1 or find an adult.

DCF has partnered with Pool Safely to provide additional tools and resources to promote awareness. For more information, visit www.poolsafely.gov/pledge.

The Southern Region has also partnered with the Florida Department of Health’s WaterproofFL campaign. For more information, visit WaterproofFL.com.
