DCF Southeast Regional Managing Director Dennis Miles named
Palm Beach County Coach of the Year

Miles coaches girls’ basketball team at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach

PALM BEACH COUNTY – For five years, the Department of Children and Families’ Southeast Regional Managing Director Dennis Miles has been coaching the girls’ basketball team at Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach.

And in each of those five seasons, Miles has led them to the district championship games.  The two most recent teams have earned back-to-back district titles, and this past season, the Crusaders won their first regional championship, launching the players to the state championship series for the first time in the school’s history.

That first state tournament appearance for the basketball team’s student athletes highlighted a record season of 27 wins and four losses, including a consecutive 17-game winning streak for the Crusaders.

The successful coaching and leadership that Miles brings to Cardinal Newman High School earned him the title of Palm Beach County Coach of the Year.  Miles and the basketball teams’ accomplishments were highlighted in the Sun-Sentinel last month.

For Miles, basketball is more than just a sport.  It’s an opportunity to promote teamwork, skill, leadership, camaraderie and help student athletes reach a goal – academically as well as on and off the court.

Miles said he’s been coaching boys’ and girls’ basketball for decades at the Amateur Athletic Union, middle school and high school levels.  It’s a sport he truly loves, as well as a way to give back to his community.

“This type of teamwork can bring out the very best in each of our players,” Miles said.  “I’ve coached many players who have gone on to earn scholarships and to play college basketball.  It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to work with student athletes who enjoy this sport as much as I do and who want to do their very best.  Those are qualities that will take them far in life as they experience success as well as not always succeeding, because it’s not just about one person but about leadership and working together as a team.”

Leadership and teamwork are principles Miles takes seriously, and he uses them in his role as regional managing director for DCF’s Southeast Region.  Miles was a career officer in the United States Marine Corps, and to him, leadership and teamwork are the foundation for success.

“I have been privileged to work with extremely talented and motivated people in my military service, my professional life, and both on and off the court,” Miles said.  “And I am especially proud of the commitment and dedication of the student athletes at Cardinal Newman.  They represent what’s best in all of us.”
