PALM BEACH COUNTY - Children in care are experiencing the joys of summer at a week-long summer camp in West Palm Beach through a partnership with the Department of Children and Families and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

More than 80 children are participating in a specially designed residential summer camp at the Everglades Youth Conservation Camp in West Palm Beach. The camp, which runs through Friday, includes experiences such as fishing, swimming, archery, canoeing, leadership workshops, activities with horses, animal encounters, art in nature and more. Children in care who are attending the camp range in age from 8 to 15 and are from Palm Beach, Broward, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Okeechobee and Miami-Dade counties.

“It’s important for children in care to be able to attend summer camp and experience all the fun that a camp can offer,” said DCF Southeast Regional Managing Director Dennis Miles. “It means a lot for kids to be able to just be kids.”

FWC has partnered with DCF for past summer camp experiences around the state and is proud to be able to host the camp for South Florida and Treasure Coast children in care at its Palm Beach County location. Some campers will be available to speak with the media and visuals include camp location, equipment, campers, DCF, FWC and community partners.

“I believe every child should have the opportunity to experience the outdoors the way that I did when I was a child,” FWC Chairman Richard “Dick” Corbett said. “We are proud to partner with DCF and mentor youth, a priority of the FWC’s Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (FYCCN), as we create the next generation that cares about Florida’s wildlife and natural resources.”
