Critical Incident Rapid Response Team Report – Janiya Thomas

Immediately learning of the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Janiya Thomas, the Florida Department of Children and Families Secretary Mike Carroll deployed a Critical Incident Rapid Response Team (CIRRT) to Manatee County.

The multidisciplinary team assessed all of the community interactions and interventions with the Thomas family and conducted a comprehensive analysis of the assessments and services.

Statement from Secretary Carroll:

“The findings in the CIRRT report outline specific areas for improvement in the child welfare system. We are committed to working with our partners at the Manatee County Sherriff’s Office and the Sarasota Family YMCA to rapidly address the findings in the report, and their coordination with Children’s Legal Services, to better protect vulnerable children. We have already begun an analysis of the roles and responsibilities of Children’s Legal Services statewide. The complex nature of the child welfare system demands constant review to better protect Florida’s most vulnerable children. No child should ever endure the horrific abuse Janiya faced.”
